Broadway Farmers' Market TONIGHT

This week's market marks the debut of In Forno Pizza!

In Forno master chef George Negy constructed a mobile firebrick wood-fired oven that bakes his from-scratch pizza in--get this--90 seconds. George prepares his pizza with fresh, all-natural ingredients: homemade dough from Italian flour; garden-grown basil; mozzarella; olives, tomatoes, mushrooms and more. In Forno pizzas are Neapolitan-style, which means that they are old-world thin crust and in the tradition of the finest pizzas in the world. Come check out his oven and get yourself a pie. Mangiano!

The Transylvania Bake Shop returns with an assortment of locally-made baked goods: Walnut Rolls, Braided Raisin Loafs, Rye Loafs, Pastries, et cetera.

Produce, of course, is starting to become more plentiful than ever. Be sure to hit up Por-Bar Farms, Green Corps, and Harvest in Christto see what's in season. You can be sure to find berries, beets, kale, cucumbers and zucchini, various herbs, chard, collards, carrots, okra, radishes and turnips -- and more, of course!

Hummingbird Creations has a huge display of homemade lotions, soaps, teas, ointments, shampoos, and more. Take some time to inspect the many lovely offerings.

Shipley's Coffee House is your place to go for coffee and smoothies! Beat the heat with some cold beverages.

And don't forget to bring your kitchen knives, lawn mower blades, and anything with a dulled edge to be sharpened by Noon Sharpening!

As always, see you this Monday from 4-7pm.

Yours in Yummy Food,

Emelio

Broadway Farmers' Market Tonight!

Loyal Market-Goers:

I know we've promised the Transylvania Baker's presence at the Broadway Market for the last few weeks -- but both Mondays, some last-minute hitches have kept him from being able to attend. This week, however, he assures us that he will be there with bushels of old-world Hungarian-style bread for you all!

For today's market, not only will our local baker join the ranks, but an expansive spice vendor--Spice Hound--is also making a visit. Spice Hound, who will come to Broadway once a month, offers a massive selection of individually bagged spices, each priced at $1 (saffron is $5 for a half gram).

Por-Bar Farms is also sponsoring this week's raffle: a new salad spinner (with a bonus bag of farm-grown salad greens)! Remember, with each purchase you make, you receive one raffle ticket for entry into the week's drawing.

For those who use Food Stamps benefits, we want to remind you (and anyone you know -- spread the word!) that using your card for $5.00 or more automatically gives you an extra $5.00 to use at the market. The Food Stamps EBT Incentive Program is a wonderful project sponsored by the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Food Policy Coalition (and funded diversely).

This week's vendors:

Por-Bar Farms (Medina County)
Green Corps Learning Farms (Slavic Village and other Cleveland locations)
Transylvania Baker (Slavic Village)
Shipley's Coffee House (Slavic Village)
Plant Kingdom (Akron)
Hummingbird Creations (Vermillion)
Noon Sharpening
Spice Hound

selection of produce offered today: beets, carrots, fava beans, green beans, snap peas, cucumbers, squash/zucchini, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries

See you today,
-Emelio

P.S. Remember to bring your Ohio Proud passports... and if you don't know what I'm talking about, visit the Market Manager's tent to find out!

First, peel the fava beans and remove the waxy covering. Combine the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve cold with pita chips from Judy's Oasis or tortilla chips from Blaze Gourmet.

Broadway Farmers' Market First Day

Hey all you hungry people -- June is here, and hand-in-hand with the summertime is the Broadway Farmers' Market!

This year is all about NEW and FUN: You might remember last year's Warszawa Farmers' Market... well, this year we changed the name, changed the logo, and moved it right on Broadway Avenue, across the street from Third Federal Savings' headquarters (Broadway at Baxter Ave).

We also changed our hours: this year, we'll open at 4pm and close at 7pm (you can still head over to Dan Kane Park on E. 65th for the Warszawa Music Festival, which starts at 7pm each Monday). All you employed in the Village from 9-5 -- make sure to stop by on your way home from work!

And now (drumroll please), I'm happy to present our fabulous market vendors--many of which are new--for the market's Grand Opening this Monday, June 6:

Por-Bar Farms -- Medina-based, selling heirloom produce varieties
Green Corps -- Slavic Village-based, selling produce, berries and salsa
Shipley's Coffee House -- Slavic Village-based, selling smoothies, Italian soda, and coffee
Transylvania Bakery -- Slavic Village-based, selling Eastern European-style bread and baked goods
Hummingbird Creations -- Vermillion-based, selling handmade herbal and aromatherapy products (soaps, shampoos, lotions, teas and more!)
Noon Sharpening -- This guy hooked up an old sewing machine for sharpening knives -- bring anything with an edge, and he'll manually sharpen while you shop!
Joe Zastawny -- recent graduate of OSU Extension's Market Gardening Course; Joe will be selling through Growhio's community vendor assistance program!
Plant Kingdom -- a far-out vegan bakery from Akron... yum!

Other vendors who will join us later in the season:

Woolf Farms -- an orchard in Columbiana County; sells strawberries, peaches, apples and sweet corn in-season
Canal Corners -- farmers from the Cuyahoga Nat'l Park's Countryside Conservancy program, selling delicious produce

Make sure you get out to our Grand Opening celebration this Monday, June 6: a local drum circle from Community Assessment and Treatment Services will get your body rockin', and we'll be raffling off some game tickets for the first-place Cleveland Indians!

Okay, enough chatter! Start planning your shopping list! (and check out our brand new website!)

Yours in local food,

Emelio
