Screening of Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead at CornUcopia

Screening of the Film:
Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead

Location:
CornUcopia Place Community Kitchen (7201 Kinsman Rd. Cleveland 44104)

About the Film: 100 pounds overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, Joe Cross is at the end of his rope and the end of his hope. In the mirror he saw a 310lb man whose gut was bigger than a beach ball and a path laid out before him that wouldn't end well- with one foot already in the grave, the other wasn't far behind. FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD is an inspiring film that chronicles Joe's personal mission to regain his health.

With doctors and conventional medicines unable to help long- term, Joe turns to the only option left, the body's ability to heal itself. He trades in the junk food and hits the road with juicer and generator in tow, vowing only to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for the next 60 days. Across 3,000 miles Joe has one goal in mind: To get off his pills and achieve a balanced lifestyle.

Getting Back To Your Roots
Root vegetables grow underneath the ground where they are able to absorb high amounts of minerals and other nutrients from the soil. They are also able to absorb important nutrients from the sun through their leaves.
Root vegetables can be enjoyed throughout the year, as they can be eaten fresh in the summer and will keep well in a dark cellar throughout the winter days.

Vendor Note

"Thank you, Jenny, and thanks to all the volunteers that make the Kamm's Corners Farmers Market happen. We had a great time there. It is very invigorating to bring a product to an appreciative customer. People's comments about the produce we brought to Kamm's were very positive."George Remington,
Morningside Farm
Roasted Winter and Root Vegetables
3 carrots, peeled
3 parsnips, peeled
3 golden beets
3 turnips
5 brussels sprouts
5 radishes
2-3 Tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
6 Tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped, stems removed
2 teaspoons dried oregano

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Rub beets with olive oil and envelop in aluminum foil.  As soon as oven is hot, place inside to roast separately.  You’ll know they’re done when a fork slides into beet easily.

Cut the remaining vegetables into 1-inch cubes. Don’t cut too small, as they’ll shrink while roasting.  Place all cut vegetables in a single layer on 2 baking sheets, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper.  Toss well to coat.

January 2013 Desktop Wallpaper

January inevitably means more time indoors and cold and blustery days.... But in a city that keeps turning up the beet in local food, it doesn't mean our options for fresh local produce have gone into hibernation. This month's free desktop wallpaper features Central Roots greens growing steadily under the shelter of a high tunnel built by Tunnel Vision Hoops. Find greens and more at your local farmers' market (yes, they are still going strong!).
