MORNINGSIDE FARMS   MorningSide Farm is a Certified Organic Farm.    We have put into production, land that has been ignored by modern agriculture for over 50 years.  Consequently, it is free of all the common chemical compounds found on conventional farms today.    Cover crops are planted in the fall to stabilize the soil, sequester nutrients and add biomass to the soil.    The soil is fortified with compost made available by local horse and livestock farms.  It is further amended with naturally occurring and organically approved minerals.    When available, we choose organically produced seeds.  In our greenhouse, we utilize locally created and organically approved potting soils.  Our trays and containers are manufactured locally.     Heat is provided to the greenhouse via a wood gasification boiler that burns with 90% efficiency.  The wood is grown and cut on the farm.    We control weeds with crop rotation, plastic and compost mulch, and mechanically.  And when all else fails, painstakingly by hand.    We control insects and microbial pests with crop rotation, mulch, floating row cover, beneficial microbes and organically approved biologically based agents.    Our crops are promptly harvested when ripe and delivered fresh.    At the Tremont Farmers' Market today: Garlic, Onions, Carrots, Parsnips, Parsley, Celery Root, Arugula, Bok Choi, Tatsoi, Napa Cabbage, Savoy Cabbage, Mizuna Mustard Greens, Rappini Greens, Watermelon Radish, Horseradish, Salad Turnips, Kale, Beets, Chard, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Winter Squash, Salad Mix, Sage, Thyme & Ginger.          J&R FARMS  J&R Farms offers the freshest meats and eggs that contain no antibiotics or hormones. They are made in small batches using only fruit and sugar, cooked until the natural fruit pectin, sugar and heat react to create the perfect gel, set but not firm. The full line of jams and jelly is available at Eddy Fruit Farm in Chesterland and the Raspberry Jam can be purchased at On the Rise in Cleveland Heights, Park Place in Peninsula, and at Lucky Penny Creamery in Kent. I envisioned flowers, tickets to a show or a weekend getaway, so when he told me he'd bought me a kettle for making kettle corn, I thought he must be joking. He wasn't. I don't ever recall specifically stating that I wanted to own a popcorn business, but I've been a popcorn fiend as long as I can remember. As a child, Friday night popcorn "parties" at home with the family were a treat and a ritual I always looked forward to. I practically lived on the stuff in college. Once married, I'd always skip dinner on movie date-nights so I could get the big tub at the theater. Once we had children, I frequently made it for them and their friends. And not that namby-pamby microwave stuff. Real "old school" popped-in-oil-on-the-stove kind of popcorn. To receive your PRODUCE PERKS locate the Customer Service booth at any of the 17 participating farmers' market and use your Ohio Direction Card to purchase tokens. The farmers' market will provide a dollar-for-dollar match (up to $10) in PRODUCE PERKS tokens that can be used to purchase fresh produce from local farmers. "Produce Perks" will be redeemable at all participating markets and will be available while supplies last. How does this incentive differ from last year? Last year Ohio Direction Card customers were able to receive an extra $5 for every transaction they made for $5 or more at participating farmers' markets to use on all Ohio Direction Card eligible food items. The 2012 incentive is limited for use on fruits and vegetables only and starts with the first dollar you spend. There is no minimal transaction amount necessary to receive incentive tokens, therefore you can spend $1 and earn another $1.
