Spring Mushroom Growing Workshop 4/27 & 4/28

Spring Mushroom Growing Workshop

with Kilindi Iyi of Detriot & Kai Wingo of Kai's Cultured Mushrooms

Saturday, April 27, 10 - 4 PM &
Sunday, April 28, 12 - 4 PM

at Possibilitarian Garden
& Kai's Cultured Mushroom Farm

Mushroom cultivation, at its heart, is energizing tissue culture and maximizing spawn production.  Mushroom strains can be cloned, expanded, and maintained on sterilized media. That may sound complicated, but in actuality mushroom cultivation can be easy, fun and rewarding.  On Saturday, April 27 from 10 - 4 pm and Sunday, April 28 from 12 - 4 pm in the Buckeye neighborhood of Cleveland, we will be holding a workshop to make mushroom growing accessible to everyone.  The workshop will begin at Possbilitarian Garden, 2909 E 117th St, Cleveland and travel to Kai's Cultured Mushroom Farm at 2765 E 127th St.

Aimed at anyone with an interest, this two-day workshop will cover the best ways to cultivate delicious gourmet and medicinal mushrooms at home, in the garden, farm, woodland or permaculture plot. We will begin to explore how mushrooms meet our needs from providing everything from food, soil development, water remediation, to relief from tumors, ulcers, arthritis and diabetes.

The focus of the course will be on using simple methods suitable to growing Shiitake, Oyster, Lions Mane, and Garden Giant mushrooms without the need for expensive equipment. We believe that most gardens and food systems are under-served by omitting the cultivation of fungi. This hands-on workshop will mobilize mushroom growers into integrating fungi by getting to know them and learning how to interact with them.  Participants of this workshop will have the knowledge to expand techniques into the space they have available- from a city flat to a five-acre woodland - and get growing for personal use or sale to chefs and farmers markets.  Everyone will participate in hands-on mushroom growing techniques including making straw grow bags & inoculating logs.  All workshop participants will go home with their own mushroom growing kit.
Class topics include:
life cycle of fungi; identifying edible fungi; mushroom compost; mushroom nutrition; spawn production; growing conditions; growing outside; woodland mushroom farming (logs, wood chips, and composts); indoor production; inexpensive start-up options for beginners (small and large scale); variety of cultivation techniques; organic pest management.
Much of the workshop will happen outdoors, do dress appropriately!  The workshop will happen rain or shine.  Bring a chair.
COST OF WORKSHOP*+
2-Day EARLY BIRD by April 5th : $100
2-Day Registration: $125
1-Day Registration: $80

Kilindi Iyi has been cultivating mushrooms for more than 30 years. His fascination with mushrooms goes back to the early seventies. In recent years, he has been teaching others to grow medicinal and gourmet mushrooms for business and hobby purposes. His favorite varieties of mushrooms are Shiitake, Oyster, Lion’s Mane, and Maitake. Living in Detroit, Kilindi shares his mushroom knowledge with urban farmers and gardeners adding the rich culture of mushroom cultivation as a welcomed addendum to gardens in the city.  Kilindi also gives a historical background into the antiquity of mushrooms and how our environment is enhanced by mushrooms paring with plants in the natural world. Kilindi’s goal is to find new sustainable ways of growing mushrooms organically.  What started out as a hobby has blossomed into a committed mission to help the urban setting utilize mushroom cultivation as a tool for a better world.

EBT PROUDLY ACCEPTED
EBT PRODUCE PERKS!

Starting in May of 2012, customers utilizing the Ohio Direction Card at participating famers' markets throughout Cuyahoga County can receive extra money or PRODUCE PERKS (in the form of market-dispensed tokens) towards the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables.

To receive your PRODUCE PERKS locate the Customer Service booth at any of the 17 participating farmers' market and use your Ohio Direction Card to purchase tokens.

The farmers' market will provide a dollar-for-dollar match (up to $10) in PRODUCE PERKS tokens that can be used to purchase fresh produce from local farmers.

"Produce Perks" will be redeemable at all participating markets and will be available while supplies last.

How does this incentive differ from last year? Last year Ohio Direction Card customers were able to receive an extra $5 for every transaction they made for $5 or more at participating farmers' markets to use on all Ohio Direction Card eligible food items. The 2012 incentive is limited for use on fruits and vegetables only and starts with the first dollar you spend. There is no minimal transaction amount necessary to receive incentive tokens, therefore you can spend $1 and earn another $1.

Cleveland Permaculture Design Certification Course

6 Weekends: September 8 - November 4, 2012 (84 Hours of Instruction)
With instructors Peter Bane, Josh Beniston, Mark Cohen and local guests.

WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?
Permaculture is an ethical belief system and practical philosophy dedicated to caring for the earth's systems and all its species, inlcuding humanity. With a set of principles and basic patterns found in nature, we relearn how to participate in our natural environment and eventually to act as designers. We draw our inspiration from nature's systems and patterns and our goal is to create harmony between the needs of the ecosystem and the needs of humanity.

For 30 years, Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, two Australians who originated the concept of Permaculture, have been teaching the core principles and practical techniques of restoring some of the most damaged ecosystems and creating economic stability amongst some of the most impoverished people of our planet. They designed a curriculum, still taught all over the world, which prepares the student to participate in this important work at home or abroad.

PERMACULTURE DESIGN CERTIFICATION COURSE OUTLINE
Permaculture Design Certification (PDC) courses intensively introduce students to the various fields of knowledge important for the aspiring designer. PDC students will also be introduced to an intermediate and advanced set of systems and practices used in Permaculture around the world. Major topics that will be covered include:
- Ecological Literacy and Natural Systems
- Permaculture Ethics and Principles
- Energy and Creative Descent
- Site Assessment and Design Methods
- Designing for Homes, Gardens and Communities
- Food Forestry and an Introduction to Broadscale Permaculture
- Natural Building, Natural Resources, and Landforming
- Soil Biology and Restoration, Soil Building, and Biochar
- Water Health, Living Machines, and Aquaculture Techniques
- Social Systems and Local Economies
As part of the certification program, students will develop and present their design for an existing land management project based in Cleveland. Successful review by the instructors leads to the Certificate in Permaculture Design--the internationally recognized standard for the use of the term Permaculture in professional environments.

Rep. Fudge Applauds New School Meal Standards

REP. FUDGE APPLAUDS NEW SCHOOL MEAL STANDARDS

WASHINGTON, DC--The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) unveiled new standards for school meals today that will help nearly 32 million kids receive more nutritious foods during the school day.  The new standards require both fruit and vegetables to be offered every day of the week, substantially increase offerings of whole grain-rich foods, ensure proper portion size based on a child's age, and focus on reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11), a strong advocate for children's health and wellness, applauded the new requirements and thanked the administration for raising school meal standards for the first time in more than fifteen years.

"Nearly one in three children is overweight or obese.  These children are on track to have a shorter lifespan than their parents, which is simply unacceptable.  Improving standards is the first step in combating preventable diseases like diabetes and heart disease due to overweight and obesity.  Let's take this momentum and continue to improve the foods our children eat."

When proposed new standards were issued in 2011, Congresswoman Fudge worked with USDA to ensure they would not adversely affect the budgets of local schools.  The new standards are expected to cost $3.2 billion over the next five years, less than half the estimated cost of the proposed standards.

Congresswoman Fudge is dedicated to the cause of eradicating childhood obesity.  In the last year, she sponsored:
  • H.Res. 2795, Fit for Life, a comprehensive approach to addressing the obesity crisis by improving the quality of and access to food, advancing preventative measures, expanding treatment of obesity in children and encouraging physical activity in underserved communities, was introduced in 2011.
  • H.Res. 339, designates September 2011 as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.  In Ohio and around the nation during the month of September, parents, schools, and health care providers will promote fitness and nutrition for our kids.  The bill has support from over 30 national organizations.
