Happenings at the Tremont Farmers' Market

Aug 30, 2011. Friendly in the Park: TFM and Connections.

Hello there, Marketpeeps.
I hope you all are well.  Today, I haven’t found inspiration for this eblast, but when I think about you all out there, I realize how this market, and I would have to say, all the markets out there, are about so much more than food.  This is not a novel idea, I realize; in fact, there are now organizations working on measuring the beneficial impacts that farmers’ markets have on their communities, in addition to boosting the economy.  For me, managing this market continues to be a wild ride, and I am frequently touched by watching the interlacing and overlapping of connections occurring in and around the market crowd.  Personally, I have met so many wonderful people at TFM, and for this, I am very grateful.
See you at the Park!
This week:
5PM Chef Demo: Gardening and cooking go hand in hand, and Chef Brian Doyle is a fine example of a chef not afraid to get his hands dirty!  Please join us for his cooking demo, I’m sure it’ll be awesome.  More info about the fantastic stuff Chef Brian is doing: http://sowfood.com/
Music:  Beth Gatchell will be playing at TFM for the first time!  I first heard Beth strum her guitar and sing about 8 years ago, and she was good then, I’m sure she’ll be great at market! Check her out at:http://www.myspace.com/paledaisies

Bring your bags, reduce your use of plastic.
Return egg cartons to Hickory Acres Meats.
Return tea containers to t by Sarah.
Return glass jars to Godmother’s Pizzas, Abby’s Kitchen and Humble Pie.
Another way to give: St. Augustine’s Church, which is across the street from the market, supports TFM in many ways.  Please consider purchasing food from the market to put in our Hunger Center bucket at the Customer Service Tent; I will personally make sure it is taken to the kitchen across the street.  For years, the folks at St. Augustine’s have fed many, many people 7 days a week.
**TFM t-shirts ($12) and aprons ($15) for sale at the Customer Service Tent!
EBT Proudly accepted! EBT Incentive Program still in effect. Participants who use more than $5 from their Ohio Direction Cards receive an extra $5 to spend at the market. EBT can be used to purchase food plants!

I want to publicly thank my friends Kathy and Jim, who regularly feed me good food, good company and good humor.  The latest laughs are in the form of a book: I Like You. Hospitality Under the Influence, by Amy Sedaris.
In the introduction to the chapter titled “The Art of Hospitality”, Sedaris writes:
‘A party can be as simple as a few people getting together for conversation and snacks.  As my guests leave even my most simplest parties, I consistently hear the same thing: “That was the best time I ever had,” and it’s always me saying it.  But I do know in my heart they all feel the same way, probably.’
Peace,

CONGRESSWOMAN FUDGE INTRODUCES BILL AIMED AT COMBATING CHILDHOOD OBESITY

For Immediate Release
Laura Allen
Press Secretary

CONGRESSWOMAN FUDGE INTRODUCES BILL AIMED AT COMBATING CHILDHOOD OBESITY,
WITH FOCUS ON MINORITY COMMUNITIES

WASHINGTON, DC-- For the second year in a row, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) has introduced legislation aimed at combating childhood obesity. Fit for Life, H.R. 2795, is a comprehensive approach to addressing the obesity crisis by improving the quality of and access to food, advancing preventative measures, expanding treatment of obesity in children and encouraging physical activity in underserved communities.

"One in three children are obese or overweight, and, for the first time in history, this generation is on track to have a shorter life span than their parents. Unfortunately, for some children, where they grow up determines how well and how long they live. Under-served communities, like many areas in Cleveland, are plagued with food deserts and neighborhoods with limited access to fresh foods. Children in the inner-city don't have safe places to exercise. This bill addresses many of the factors that impact the high rate of obesity specifically in minority communities," said Congresswoman Fudge.

The legislation has support from more than 20 organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine, American Beverage Association, and America SCORES Cleveland. It was cosponsored by Rep. Donna Christensen (Virgin Islands), Rep. Barbara Lee (CA-9), and Rep. Donald Payne (NJ-10).

"The country spends almost $150 billion per year to treat obesity-related conditions in adults. Costs due to excess weight during childhood are estimated at $3 billion per year, yet it's estimated that 80 percent of overweight adolescents grow up to be obese adults. This bill addresses excess costs through preventative measures and altering external circumstances to reduce the number of children who will become obese, therefore reducing the likelihood they will become obese adults," said Congresswoman Fudge.

This legislation tackles the lack of supermarkets in underserved communities by creating a program to award grants to local partnerships to establish or enhance existing supermarkets that sell fresh fruits and produce in low income communities located in food deserts. It expands the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, by amending the National School Lunch Act, to include secondary schools, child care centers, and family child care homes, while increasing access to the Summer Food Service Programs for Children. View a summary of the bill attached.

"We talk extensively about the health of the country we will leave our children, but what about the health of the children we will leave our country? We encourage our kids to prosper, but too many of them will not be healthy enough to fight in the military, or will be overburdened with diseases like type II diabetes and high blood pressure when they grow up."

Congresswoman Fudge also introduced H.R. 339 earlier this year; the bill designates September 2012 as Childhood Obesity Awareness month. Click here for more information.

"Capitalism Works For Me," a traveling exhibit part of SPACES Gallery's World Artists Program
Los Angeles artist Steve Lambert is taking his "Capitalism Works For Me" on the road and he's kicking his tour off in Cleveland this Friday at DFM. The sign will then travel to Boston, Santa Fe, Los Angeles and other cities throughout the US. A 20-foot long, 9foot tall lighted sign allowing viewers to vote “true” or “false” through a kiosk and accompanying LCD scoreboard, Capitalism Works For Me aims to start a conversation about capitalism. Through Lambert’s bright, glitzy sign that borrows its aesthetics from the trappings of capitalism, discussions of capitalism aren’t framed as awkward party conversation or polemic political dogma, but as simple benign votes that are catalysts or gentle primers for discussion. The space around the sign becomes a zone where meaningful conversation of economic structures is welcomed and fostered.

The word "capitalism" is often anathema to conversation—its introduction to social situations is becomes a cue that things are getting uncomfortable. However, capitalism is discussed every day in our culture using euphemisms like "jobs," "job creation," "the business climate," and discussing whatever "crisis" is deemed relevant: a housing crisis, financial crisis, job crisis, or fill-in-the blank crisis. These are pieces, but the whole is rarely a topic of frank discussion, much less any mention of alternatives or meaningful reform of the sacred cow.

The project/sign will be on view at SPACES August 26-October 21, but will travel around Cleveland to see how the conversation changes depending upon geography and socio-economic situations.

SPACES Art Gallery is also hosting an opening reception this Friday, August 26 from 6:00-9:00pm. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct, Cleveland, OH 44113.

East Cleveland Farmer’s Market to Receive Dramatic Paint Makeover
Lakewood-based painting contractor and its employees give time, talent to transform one of area’s most deserving organizations

In what promises to be a dramatic and inspiring display support for a historic and truly vital enterprise, 60-plus volunteers will scrape, sand, and paint new life into a cornerstone of the East Cleveland community. The Coit Road Farmer’s Market—one of the few places in the East Cleveland where residents can buy fresh, locally-grown produce and a community landmark since 1932—was selected by Lakewood-based Neubert Painting as the 2011 recipient of its annual Charity Paint Giveaway.
In just one day, the historic structure will go from weathered and chipping to fresh and vibrant. The volunteers who will donate their time and talent include Neubert Painting employees as well as employees from Cleveland-based Sherwin-Williams, which is also donating the 70 gallons of paint needed to complete the Coit Road Farmer’s Market transformation. The paint giveaway has a total retail value of $16,000.

The Coit Road Farmer’s Market was chosen from 50 nominations submitted to Lakewood-based Neubert Painting for its Charity Paint Giveaway. John Neubert, founder and CEO, says his company is thrilled to help revitalize an institution committed to the well-being of its neighbors and East Cleveland’s economy. "It is often hard for people in urban areas to find fresh produce, and Coit Road Farmer’s Market fills that need, while also serving as an important part of the economic foundation of this community," he says. The Coit Road Farmer’s Market includes an urban farm and a community garden where residents can plant their own produce and sell them at the market.

Kevin Scheuring, vice president of the East Cleveland Famer’s Market Preservation Society says, "We’re very excited to be chosen. Despite the fact that we have great food and good farmers, people have a hard time getting past the shabby exterior. This will make a huge difference to us and to the people in the neighborhood."

ABOUT NEUBERT PAINTING
Founded by John Neubert in 1975, Lakewood-based Neubert Painting has been a leading painting contractor in Cleveland and Akron for 36 years. Neubert Painting owes its long history to its refusal to sacrifice quality and customer satisfaction for profit. The company paints about 300 homes every year. Since 2008, Neubert has chosen a worthy recipient (such as Maggie’s Place, a home for needy expectant mothers) for its annual Charity Paint Giveaway.
