Happenings at the Downtown Farmers' Market

Today!

"Capitalism Works For Me," a traveling exhibit part of SPACES Gallery's World Artists Program
Los Angeles artist Steve Lambert is taking his "Capitalism Works For Me" on the road and he's kicking his tour off in Cleveland this Friday at DFM. The sign will then travel to Boston, Santa Fe, Los Angeles and other cities throughout the US. A 20-foot long, 9foot tall lighted sign allowing viewers to vote “true” or “false” through a kiosk and accompanying LCD scoreboard, Capitalism Works For Me aims to start a conversation about capitalism. Through Lambert’s bright, glitzy sign that borrows its aesthetics from the trappings of capitalism, discussions of capitalism aren’t framed as awkward party conversation or polemic political dogma, but as simple benign votes that are catalysts or gentle primers for discussion. The space around the sign becomes a zone where meaningful conversation of economic structures is welcomed and fostered.

The word "capitalism" is often anathema to conversation—its introduction to social situations is becomes a cue that things are getting uncomfortable. However, capitalism is discussed every day in our culture using euphemisms like "jobs," "job creation," "the business climate," and discussing whatever "crisis" is deemed relevant: a housing crisis, financial crisis, job crisis, or fill-in-the blank crisis. These are pieces, but the whole is rarely a topic of frank discussion, much less any mention of alternatives or meaningful reform of the sacred cow.

The project/sign will be on view at SPACES August 26-October 21, but will travel around Cleveland to see how the conversation changes depending upon geography and socio-economic situations.

SPACES Art Gallery is also hosting an opening reception this Friday, August 26 from 6:00-9:00pm. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct, Cleveland, OH 44113.

The No Whey Chocolate Company offers a healthier alternative to snacking and sweets with handmade non-dairy, gluten-free and soy-less chocolates. The ingredients use no hydrogenated oils and have no trans fats, allowing No Whey to make heart healthy dark chocolate as well as a milk-less "Milk" chocolate in many mouth watering gourmet combinations. For example, you'll find dark chocolate-covered bananas with almonds, white chocolate-covered strawberries sprinkled with cookie crumbs, chocolate bark, peanut butter wedges, and so much more!

No Whey wanted to give vegans and those who cannot tolerate lactose choices like the rest of the population, but but most of their customers are non-vegans who just like the products. The ultimate compliment is receiving hugs and tears from people who thought they could never eat chocolate again. They'd love to speak with you about gift orders and adding their special touch to your special event. Please feel free to contact Ethel and Stacie Wernick at 216-233-8749 or veganlcnw@gmail.com.
